The construction of a new Tamuka hub in Kakuma Refugee Settlement has been completed at SAVIC (Solidarity & Advocacy for Vulnerable Individuals in Crisis). Xavier Project have partnered with SAVIC who have been established in the camp for a while and have good access to refugee communities within the camp. They had additional space and permission to build a structure so we have been able to work closely together. This location is ideal for the hub due to the huge local youth population which is one of our primary audiences for the training sessions. The hub opened its doors last week to host its first Basic Computer training for a group of 36 refugees. and The will serve local refugee communities with opportunities to improve digital literacy. In addition to this we will also hope to set up some BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) jobs at Kakuma as part of our Tamuka I/O initiative.
We have been able to employ a full-time staff member to be based at the centre who. Ruth Njiri will be there to work with SAVIC and other CBOs (Community Based Organisation) in the camp to coordinate Tamuka I//O work and partner closely with CBOs in the camp to implement the Community Enterprise Cycle. We are looking into partnering with CBOs and refugee lead groups around the camps with the aim to reach out to 3500 refugees in 2 years with the digital programs, as well as potentially working with GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit – German development agency) on additional courses including, Adult Literacy, Literacy, Numeracy, Maternal care, Sexual Reproductive Health and Financial Literacy. The will be Xavier Project’s first permanent structure at Kakuma – a very exciting venture for us all. Watch this space!
